Free disposal of household hazardous waste available for Canyon County residents

Pickles Butte Sanitary Landfill is giving the opportunity to Canyon County residents to dispose of their household hazardous and electronic waste from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14 in the parking lot of the O’Connor Field House in Caldwell.

According to a Canyon County press release, the event is free for Canyon County residents. Those participating are asked to stay in their vehicle and to place the waste somewhere easily accessible such as the trunk or truck bed of the vehicle. Each household is allotted 25 gallons of waste or 20 household items.

The list of accepted waste includes cleaning products such as oven cleaners, drain cleaners, wood and metal cleaners and polishers, toilet cleaners, tub and shower cleaners, tile cleaners, bleach and pool chemicals.

Residents can also donate indoor pesticides like ant spray and baits, cockroach sprays and baits, flea repellents and shampoos, bug sprays, houseplant insecticides, moth repellents, mouse/rat poison and baits. Automotive products like motor oil, fuel additives, carburetor and fuel injection cleaners, starter fluids, automotive batteries, transmission and brake fluid and antifreeze will also be accepted.

Workshop and painting supplies such as adhesives and glues, furniture strippers, oil or enamel based paints, stains and finishes, paint thinners and turpentine, paint strippers and removers, photographic chemicals, fixatives and other solvents will also be accepted.

Residents can donate lawn and garden products like herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and wood preservatives.

Household batteries and fluorescent light bulbs including nickel-cadmium batteries, lithium and lithium ion batteries, fluorescent tubes and light bulbs will also be accepted.

Other flammable products like propane tanks, kerosene, home heating oil, diesel fuel, gas and oil mix and lighter fluid are also accepted.

Residents can donate acceptable electronic waste including cell phones, computers, monitors, printers, audio/video and small devices.

Biological waste, anything that has been exposed to radioactivity, prescription medication, ammunition and explosives will not be accepted. Anything other than household waste, such as business waste, will not be accepted without an appointment with Pickles Butte Sanitary Landfill.
